What proofreading covers

Proofreading is the last pass before a manuscript goes to a journal. Your editor corrects errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation, and makes the text consistent: one spelling variant (US or UK), one style for numbers, units and abbreviations, and matching terms throughout.

Proofreading does not rewrite sentences for clarity or flow. If English is not your first language, or reviewers have commented on the writing, choose Academic Copyediting instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between proofreading and copyediting?

Proofreading corrects errors: spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency. Copyediting also improves how the text reads: sentence structure, clarity, flow and academic tone. Most authors writing in a second language need copyediting.

How much does proofreading cost?

5¢/word for standard delivery and 9¢/word for express. A 6,000-word article costs $300 with standard delivery.

Will I see every change?

Yes. You receive a tracked-changes file, so you can accept or reject each edit.
